Global Accessibility Awareness Day Statement

On this Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD), taking place this year on Thursday, May 15th, the Irish National Braille and Alternative Formats Authority (INBAF) encourages everyone to celebrate and advocate for a more accessible world. Accessibility is not just a necessity; it is a fundamental right that ensures everyone, regardless of ability, can participate fully in society.

In today’s digital age, the relevance of accessible formats cannot be overstated. From Braille, large print, digital/electronic texts and audio, these tools empower individuals with low or no vision to access information, communicate, and engage with their communities. As we move forward, it is crucial that we continue to prioritise accessibility in all aspects of our lives.

We are particularly excited about the upcoming European Accessibility Act, which will come into law at the end of June this year. This legislation represents a significant step toward a more inclusive Europe, where products and services are designed to be accessible to all.

We urge everyone to embrace accessibility in their daily lives. Whether you are a business owner, a content creator, or simply an individual, you have the power to make a difference. Let us work together to create a world where accessibility is the norm, not the exception.
